Gordon Brown has apologised for the treatment of Alan Turing following the war, after over 30,000 virtual signatures were added to a petition asking him to do so.
[Alan] Turing is often considered to be the father of modern computer science. He provided an influential formalisation of the concept of the algorithm and computation with the Turing machine. In 1999 Time Magazine named Turing as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century for his role in the creation of the modern computer, stating: “The fact remains that everyone who taps at a keyboard, opening a spreadsheet or a word-processing program, is working on an incarnation of a Turing machine.” – Wikipedia
During the Second World War he was part of the effort to decrypt messages encoded using Enigma machines that the Germans, Italians and Japanese used to communicate securely. He built machines capable of decrypting these messages much faster than would ever be possible by human beings, and it was during this work that he developed his ideas that later led to computing.
He died very young, at the age of 41. He committed suicide two years after being convicted of ‘gross indecency’ – because he was gay. He was subject to an experimental treatment of chemical castration during which he was injected with female hormones in order to reduce his libido, which understandably led to severe depression followed by his untimely death.
Without Turing, the War would definitely have had a different outcome. Computers and the Internet may never have been invented. The world as we know it would be a very different place. Thankfully we no longer treat homosexuals in such horrible ways anymore, and let us hope such a tragedy never gets repeated.

It looks like when I installed HLstatsX on the L4D servers, we hit an instability in the Source Dedicated Server engine that causes crashes on level load. I think this is fixed now, but I’m keeping a very close eye on the servers and know what to change to fix it.
There appear to be a few serious bugs in srcds_i486 (the Source Dedicated Server binary), including a memory corruption / use after free() problem (the L4D “glibc bug”) and a race condition triggered by the logaddress_add command. In fact my server crashes seem to be fixed by moving that command from somewhere in the middle of the server.cfg file to right at the end. Let’s hope that’s the end of the segfaults which screwed up so many games over the past couple of days!
Update: My fix didn’t actually solve the problem, so I’ve had to disable HLstatsX on the three servers for now. Sorry folks!
Update 2: I’ve re-enabled HLstatsX now.

I’ve configured HLstatsX Community Edition to gather stats on how people are doing on the three Left 4 Dead servers that I run. I’ve made sure that all the annoying popup messages are disabled so you don’t get spammed during the game, though I’ve left the join messages enabled which show others your ranking when you join. Enjoy!
Update: I’ve had to disable this for now. Sorry folks!
Update 2: I’ve re-enabled HLstatsX now.

I’ve finally got round to setting up a banner and MOTD on the three L4D servers I run for the group, and I’ve also set up SourceBans to make managing server admins easier. This also means that users that get themselves banned while playing on any of the servers will be banned from all the servers at the same time. Currently we have no bans, and I hope it stays that way, so this is just a preventative measure.

Skelton, Lockwolf and myself (bootc) got together and discussed how best to organise the forums, and after a long discussion we’ve settled on a bit of a refresh. Go take a look and see what you think!

Just a quick note to say the Play Responsibly Club Forums are live, thanks to the efforts of Lockwolf. He will be our admin on there until we find more people to give him a helping hand. So without further ado, enjoy the forums!

Welcome, everyone, to the Left 4 Dead Play Responsibly Club’s brand-new web site. Since we are growing fast and up to now have not had a proper presence on the intertubes, I (bootc) thought it was high time that we should set something up.
The PRC is a group of people who play Left 4 Dead for the fun and enjoyment of the game, and pride ourselves on the quality of our games. For more information, see our About page or join our Steam group, which is where games get organised.
This site is definitely still in its infancy and we need people who can build a theme for the site and write some content. We are also in the process of building a forum where group members can hang out and perhaps use it to schedule tournaments in future.
If you wish to volunteer, please post a comment on this post or join us in chat.
